An interview with Lori Foster (LL Foster)

Lori Foster writes dark fantasy under the name LL Foster and is a member of the new virtual authors group, Dark Muse Society. You can visit her and fellow authors in the virtual world, here.

What attracted you to writing books with paranormal elements?
Horror/urban fantasy is always entertaining! A mediocre horror movie is often better than a good comedy or drama. I LOVE all things scary/suspenseful, and the possibilities involved with paranormal expand the boundaries of plotlines.

What is your favorite paranormal creature?
I can’t say I have a favorite “creature,” but my favorite paranormal type element is mind-reading. In romance, especially, it can be very fun to incorporate.

Do you base your paranormal worlds/beings off myths and legends or make them up?

They’re from my own need for balance in a society where so much evil exists.
If superheroes, in the form or beings more powerful, more intuitive and more capable, existed, there’d be a great equalizer against evil.

What do you think is the most important element when writing a paranormal book?

The most important element in ANY book, imo, is characterization. You want readers to be able to identify with your cast so that they’re more drawn into the story. You want readers to live the book, not just read it.

Do you find writing a paranormal to be easier or harder than writing in another genre?
For right now, it’s more exciting because it’s new for me. But I’m sure with time, and as the series grows, that’ll wan. Other than being “different,” I can’t say either is harder or easier.

Do you believe in the paranormal or do you consider yourself more a skeptic?
Definitely a believer. So much of the brain’s ability is untapped. We’re all skeptics to some degree, and that’s why we can’t trust our instincts more.

Do you believe that people can possess psychic abilities?

Absolutely. And I’ve experienced psychic predictions that proved true. I’m a complete believer, and maybe that’s why it’s such a natural inclination for me to incorporate that into my new series.

Have you ever experienced anything paranormal?

Yep! It’s scary, but also exciting.

Do you find you write paranormals better with a certain setting?
Each setting is different, because each cast of characters is different, and each plot is different. All of those elements have to fit together and be important to the book.
