Behind the Story: Touch Me by Beverly Rae

“Oh, my. Now she’s not only reading those weird kinds of books, but writing them, too.”

Yep, that was the first thing my mother said when I told her my first book was under contract. My mother, bless her eighty-one year old soul, has never understood my obsession with the paranormal and supernatural. As soon as I could, I began watching shows like The Twilight Zone and The Outer Limits. Then came the movies I craved like Planet of the Apes, The Exorcist, The Omen, Dracula and Ghost. Whenever I couldn’t get to the movies, I scoured the library for Stephen King books like The Stand and Misery. Yet even all the movies and books weren’t enough. I needed more. I needed a missing ingredient in these stories. I needed romance and the paranormal all rolled up into one great tale.

Then one day my daughter gave me an idea. As we sat on the sofa watching a romantic movie, my daughter turned to me and asked, “How do you know when you’re in love? How do you know he’s the one? Is it like magic?” I paused, considering my response. After explaining that love can indeed be magical, I had to tell her there was no sure way of knowing. She frowned at me and answered, “Too bad you can’t just touch them and know.”

Just touch them? I smiled. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if someone could simply touch a person and name that person’s true soul mate? Would love be easier to find? Would lovers stay together forever knowing they’d found their one true love? But would there be a price to pay for such a gift? While my daughter watched the rest of the movie, my mind began wondering, formulating the plotline.

Four months later, I’d written my first book. Combining the supernatural with the romantic, I’d penned a tale of magic, love, loss and happiness entitled Touch Me.
