MAY: FUNDAMENTAL WORLDBUILDING
INSTRUCTOR: Jaci Burton and Mandy M Roth
WHEN: May 5 to May 16, 2008 (6 lessons posted over 2 weeks)
WORKSHOP
So you want to write a paranormal romance. Where do you start? With
World Building, of course. No easy task, but we hope to help. World
Building is an all encompassing part of the paranormal. From
characters to geography to weapons to social dynamics, to the
creatures or magic contained within your world, everything in a
paranormal must be created by you, the writer. And once you create
your world, you and your characters must abide by those rules. We’ll
show you where to start, the step by step process for creating your
world, and how you and your characters can easily learn to live
within the boundaries you’ve set.
ABOUT THE INSTRUCTORS
Jaci Burton is a National Bestselling author of contemporary erotic
romance and paranormal romance. She writes for four publishers, so
her life is spent juggling deadlines and trying to keep the
characters straight in all her books. Jaci is an award winning
author, and has won the Romantic Times Bookclub Magazine’s Reviewer’s
Choice Award. Jaci makes her home in northeast Oklahoma with her
husband and more dogs than she can wrangle. To date she has
published over thirty-five books. http://www.jaciburton.com
Mandy M. Roth grew up fascinated by creatures that go bump in the
night. From the very beginning, she showed signs of creativity. At
age five, she had her first piece of artwork published. Writing came
into play early in her life as well. Over the years, the two mediums
merged and led her to work in marketing. Combining her creativity
with her passion for horror has left her banging on the keyboard into
the wee hours of the night. Mandy lives with her husband and three
children on the shores of Lake Erie, where she is currently starting
work on her Master’s Degree. She was nominated for Romantic Times
Bookclub Magazine’s Reviewer’s Choice Award for Best Paranormal
Erotic. http://www.mandyroth.com

I’m one of those people who are guilty of working too much. Of throwing myself into something fully and then having something completely off the wall pull me from that state of mind, making me smile or in this case bit my lower lip and focus really hard on getting alone time with my hubby.
Shane, gods love him, needs a medal for living with me. Seriously folks. Do I strike you as a normal wife? Yeah, see what I mean. There are days I’m not sure he even sees me because I’m in my writing cave that all Roth family members know better than to disturb.
Getting to the point, my sons are all very musically inclined. Gee… wonder where they got that from. LMAO. Anyway, the big one talked his dad into singing for his band for a few songs. Now I’m fully aware my husband can sing. Does he do it often? Hell no. The only reason I know he can is because I came home early once and he was having a one man rock out session in the bar room at our old house. I figured it out by accident. Much to my delight, the hubby agreed to do a few songs with the boys. As he’s singing, I found myself grinning like a love struck fool… okay fine… a groupie. My guess is now that Shane’s figured out I like it, he might actually walk around rockin’ out more.
*snort*
Seriously though. Its funny how him taking time out to do something with the mini-hims caught my attention like that. I just wanted to share because I found it amusing and though you all might too.
Here are a couple of the songs he sang.
One I came home early to hear him rockin out to many years back

Story: Looking into the eyes of a magnificent jaguar stirs something in photographer Dana Mallon’s heart and heats the jaguar tattoo on her hip. The longer she studies the magnificent beast sentenced to a life within a wildlife preserve, the greater the sense that forces beyond her comprehension are at work. In her mind—only in her mind—the predator becomes a fierce naked man. Instead of fleeing his blatant sexuality, she walks toward him, her body afire and mind spinning.
Then the Aztec warrior Nacon pulls her against his body and everything she has always believed about herself and her existence shifts. A lifetime of loneliness and searching begins to fade beneath the power of their sexual union, but Nacon needs more from her than just her body. Freed from centuries spent in limbo, Nacon is determined to learn why this woman is responsible. There’s only one way to learn the truth, by having her travel into the past with him—and forcing her to embrace the incomprehensible.
But does she have the courage?
Inspiration: Coming up with story ideas is always an adventure. Sometimes they jump into my mind without my having anything to do with it. Other times, like with BloodHunter, a little priming of the pump is necessary. The process began when I grabbed a book about the Aztecs from my personal library. A fascinating people! Complex and intelligent, yet fatally flawed. The more I read, the more convinced I became that I wanted to explore their culture in an erotic story. And when I learned that a warrior group known as the Jaguar Society opposed the Aztec bloody sacrifices, the light bulb went off. And because I didn’t want to bury myself in research about that time in history, I pulled my hero into the present day as a time traveler for much of the story. To create the link between hero and heroine, I placed her roots in Aztec times, something wildlife photographer Diana Mallon didn’t know until Nacon steps into her world, first as a jaguar, then as a hunky sexy man.
I write erotica for Kensington’s Aphrodisia line, Ellora’s Cave, and Loose ID, but I aimed BloodHunter for Samhain because owner/publisher Crissy Brashear and I roomed together in Germany, and I really wanted to work with her.
I finally got around to getting a cell phone that was made sometime in this decade. Just kidding. I’m not that bad but I was close. Considering how cheap I am, it was a hard thing for me to do. After some thought, I ended up going with a Treo Palm smartphone. Unfortunately for me, I’m clearly not smart enough to work it. It took me most of the day to figure out I couldn’t hear someone talking because the bluetooth was on and I wasn’t wearing it.
Uh, yes, people… I am that cell phone challenged.
I’m all ears if anyone has one and has pointers for me.
