Working Women Wed

WwW with Jaci Burton

Are you thinking about our planet? When you go about your no doubt very busy day, are you thinking about how everything you do impacts the world we live in? From the cost of gasoline to the burning of fossil fuels to the amount of garbage we create that’s littering up the landfills, we have to take a step back and realize that we can make a difference and create a better planet for our children and all the children that come after them. And save money!

Look, Ma, I’m Amish!

Posted by Mandy M. Roth on Jul 22, 2008 in Day in the Life

So not the words you want to hear when you’re me. Seriously folks, I’m like Wednesday Addams. The last thing I want is my middle kid showing up in is an "I’m Amish" T-shirt and a Farmer Jones hat. The sunglasses were a nice touch though.

Moron Mom Moment #43

Posted by Mandy M. Roth on Jul 21, 2008 in Hell If I Know What It Should Be Labeled

A with grandpas grave

So, I stopped by the cemetery with the boys because middle kid requested it. He wanted to visit my grandpa’s grave. I said sure. After much hide and seek (I personally think my grandpa was moving his grave on us) we finally found his spot. My grandpa fixed/made clocks and pocket watches, its why you see the pocket watch on his headstone.

Lil’ kid never met my grandpa. He passed right before he was born. That didn’t stop him from wanting to get out and visit too.

I’m standing there, letting middle kid visit and I notice lil’ kid putting his ear to the ground.

Me: "What are you doing?"

Lil’ Kid: Gives me look like "moron" and says, "I’m talking to Grandpa, Mom."

Oh, sorry. That was my next guess. This went on for a bit and we weren’t allowed to leave until lil’ kid had updated my grandpa on everything he could think of. I ran and grabbed my camera from the car and got a pic.

While we’re leaving the cemetery, lil’ kid says "Mom, can we get grandpa out of there, take him to the doctor and fix him."

Its moments like this that I wish parenting came with a handbook. See How to Deal with Death page 131.

Me, being the all star mom that I am, change the subject to "who wants to go swimming at Nana’s?"

Ooo, lookie, the shinny object distraction worked.

I’m lacking a virtue

Posted by Mandy M. Roth on Jul 20, 2008 in Hell If I Know What It Should Be Labeled

Patience. Clearly I’m lacking this one in a big way. Fine, for the sake of the argument I’ll concede that I might be lacking more than one of the virtues. Patience seems to be my biggest, at least for the moment. It seems every which way I turn, its a hurry up and wait game. Blah. Par for the course in the writing world. Maybe a good fairy will come and grant me the ability to relax, kick my feet up and stop caring. That or just get me really drunk and I’ll totally forget what I was obsessing about to start with.

Here is my week in review update. I’ve done 12 covers in about two weeks (I think its less than two weeks actually  but I don’t have the dates in front of me). I’m wicked excited about them all and can’t wait for a chance to be able to share the rest of them with you. I’ve got my fingers crossed that I get even more to work on. I love art. Its such a great outlet.

On the writing front… I’m still waiting to hear back from one of my editors. He seems to vanish at will. I might put up "missing" posters around the area. As soon as I get an answer from him, I’ll be able to pass on a release date to all of you. Whoohoo!

I subbed something to NY. Now its a matter of sitting on my hands and waiting with my breath held. I’ll be sure to post if I hear anything more on that. I also have a few leads/requests from agents that I need to follow up on. Again, I’ll be sure to update if anything new comes up.

I had it pointed out to me that I’m a dork and worry too much (more than once in the last week and by more than one person… hmm, I think they might be onto something there). I’ll do my best to calm my neuroticisms. (Stop laughing) Okay, I’ll think about doing my best to calm them.

I wrote for about three hours this morning. I actually planned to take a chunk of the summer off from writing but the muse bit so I went with it. I still plan to wait to go balls to the wall with it again once school starts back up around here but I NEVER say no when the bug bites.

What’s everyone else been up to?

My oldest is 14 today!

Posted by Mandy M. Roth on Jul 19, 2008 in Hell If I Know What It Should Be Labeled

Wow, biggest is nearing the driving age. That makes me sick to my stomach just thinking about it. It hit me that he was getting older a few years back when there stopped being any requests for toys on the list. I miss the toy days. They’re way cheaper than xbox 360 games.

Working Women Wednesdays with JC Wilder

Posted by Mandy M. Roth on Jul 16, 2008 in Hell If I Know What It Should Be Labeled

Working Women Wed

When Mandy asked me to write a Working Woman blog, I have no idea why I said yes! What do you want to hear? About how I suck down two huge mugs of coffee in the morning in order to pry my eyes open? About taking phone messages while driving? How I seem to forget everything I have to do the moment I get into a car?

Yeah, its ugly and my boss is such a shrew…because I work for myself.

Almost everyone I meet tells me how lucky I am to work for myself. I do agree with them to a certain extent, I mean, what’s not to like about working in your pajamas? But there is a definite level of pressure that comes with being your own boss that you don’t have when someone else is paying the bills. So you still want to work for yourself? Please keep a few things in mind.
