I get lots of email and I love it. It often means I’m backlogged on responding though. That is a downside. I thought I’d answer some of the more popular questions here, on my blog. No worries, I won’t post your name or your exact question. I’ll just paraphrase.
This first one is devoted to aspiring authors who email seeking guidance. They often ask what words of wisdom do I have to share. First and foremost, stay true to yourself and what feels good. Trying to follow a fad will get you nowhere quickly. Write what you love. If you’re writing what you love and what you’re passionate about, you’ll find the “wall” some authors talk about hitting while writing, is easier to hurdle.
We as writers all face different and very personal “walls”. What I think about every time I deal with it is a quote someone told me that the lovely Nora Roberts said when asked about writers block. I’m paraphrasing again here folks because I don’t have the exact the quote.
“You can’t edit a blank page”
Honestly, that is the best snippet of advice I can pass onto any aspiring author.
I know many have asked me to read over their manuscripts or listen to their storylines to help them spot a problem. Sadly, my attorneys have strongly advised me against doing anything of the sort. What I can suggest is hunting for a writers critique group in your area or even online. There are loads and loads of them. Find one you trust. Use caution posting uncontracted work online.
UPDATE to this blog post– here is a great post about spotting a dysfunctional writers group
I hope this helps and good luck! :)
