Red Bicyclette Pinot Noir
I’m on the hunt for affordable wines. These can range anywhere from $7-40 a bottle. The record should state I’m really only a fan of reds. I often find bottles at the $10 and under price point to be less than what I’d hoped for. Case in point, Raven’s Wood. Wasn’t a fan by any means. Very oak heavy IMO. Now, let me get to the wine at hand–Red Bicyclette’s Pinot Noir. I read some reviews prior to buying and was expecting it to be heavy on the iron and tannis side. I have to admit, I didn’t find that to be the case. I think that the wine would certainly do better with cheese or something of the like but it stands on its own just fine.
What are some of your favorites and why?
Cycles Gladiator Cabernet Sauvignon, hands down my favorite wine. I used to work at a gourmet grocery store/espresso bar that was sisters with the next-door wine shop, and Cycles was the first wine I had been recommended. The sales associate’s selling point was,” It’s a $7 bottle of wine that tastes like a $12 bottle of wine,” as if, at the time, that meant anything to me when all I knew was Yellowtail. And at the time, I wasn’t a wine drinker at all –I thought it was too astringent, not smooth and fruity like the wines my grandmother tells stories about drinking in Italy.
Cycles really changed my opinion on wine, and I’ve since branched out to other types of wine (it had me convinced that cabernet was the only way). I purchased a bottle a week as long as I was working next door to that shop.
Then I moved back home to NYC, and that $7 bottle of wine turned into a $15 bottle, so for two years I went without. Glad to be back in a city where it’s down to $7 again!
